Happy Birthday to one of the most notable members of our Massachusetts wrestling community, Steven Goode!!
Steve Goode is a 1981 graduate of East Carolina University with a degree in History. He received his master's degree in 1983 from James Madison University. In 1991 he completed another masters degree in education and special education from Fitchburg State.
He attended Manor High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. He started wrestling as a sophomore and went on to become a 3x Virginia state qualifier. He was a 2x Southeastern District Champion, 2x Eastern Regional Champion. He went on to claim the Virginia State title at 155 pounds while defeating the defending State Champion. He was a perfect 36-0 his senior year. A few weeks later Goode wrestled against the Polish Jr Olympic team and was the only American to win. He complied a 86-10 record during his three years of high school wrestling. Goode earned a full athletic scholarship. He attended East Carolina University were he was a finalist and a 3x Southern Conference place winner. Goode has won well over sixty tournaments during his career and post college career. He reached the finals of the Eastern Nationals 10x and claimed 7x Eastern National titles. He was also a 2x Sunshine Open Finalist, 2x Wilkes Open Champion, Carolina Open Champion, Clemson Open Champion, 2x Central Connecticut Champion, Eastern Michigan Open Champion and a 10x Bay State Games Champion. In 1990, Goode competed in the Rocuzzi International Freestyle Wrestling World Cup in Hungary, where he captured first place and was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. He placed in the in the top ten in the 1990 U.S. Freestyle National Tournament and challenged for a spot on the 1992 Olympic team. Goode was also a member of the New York Athletic Club wrestling team and the U.S. Veteran World team member.
Goode began his coaching career at Farmville Central High School in North Carolina. He coached his first two state finalist and claimed one individual state title. His team placed in the top five in the N.C. State wrestling tournament. As a coach, he led the Virginia Jr. National Freestyle and Greco team to a second place Freestyle , third in Greco -Roman at the 1988 Jr. Worlds. He taught government and history and coach at Manor High where he rebuilt the team to a winning record. He left Manor and went to Churchland to teach and rebuild the wrestling team. Opportunity knocked and Goode answered the call to move to Boston to teach high school and become the assistant wrestling coach at Boston University under the legendary Carl Adams for fourteen years. Goode coached over forty national qualifiers, three All Americans, six team conference championships, fourteen top five team conference finishes during his tenure at Boston University.
