A very Happy Birthday.

Thanks Matt!

Happy Birthday to one of Weymouth’s all-time greats, Joe Curran!!

Joe was a three-sport athlete competing in football, wrestling, and lacrosse for Weymouth High School. Curran was a 2-year Varsity nose tackle for the WHS football team and when football season was over, Curran brought his grit and determination from the football field onto the wrestling mat where he earned a reputation that was known throughout the State. Curran was the first New England Champion in the sport of wrestling for WHS and is one of only three athletes to have ever achieved that title.

Curran was a 2-time South Sectional Wrestling Champion, a Div. 1 State Champion, and a Massachusetts All-State Champion. In his senior year, Curran had an almost perfect record of 50-1 and avenged his only loss of that season by defeating college All-American, Pete Doucet of NH in the New England finals. Curran was named the Boston Globe’s All-Scholastic Wrestler of the Year in 1996 and was a 3-time Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic, a 2-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic, and a 2-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic. Curran was a 3-time champion at the North Attleboro wrestling tournament, a 2-time champion at the Whitman Hanson Invitational and Marshfield Holiday Classic tournaments, and was a 2-time gold medalist at the Massachusetts Summer Bay State Games. Curran was named the WHS Male MVP in 1996 and after graduating from WHS, Curran went on to wrestle at Blair Academy in New Jersey which is the #1 ranked prep school in wrestling in the country. After completing one year of post-graduate studies at Blair Academy, Curran went on to wrestle for Springfield College and Roger Williams University where he was ranked as high as 14th in the country, #1 in New England and eventually went on to achieve All-New England honors. Curran was a team captain for both the wrestling and lacrosse teams at WHS. On the lacrosse field, Curran was a dominant “face-off” specialist racking up one of the highest face-off win records in team history.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Curran went on to graduate from law school and now has a successful law firm in Weymouth. Curran now lives in Hanover with his wife Franca and his two children Ava and Luke.

Did you know there is a shortage of wrestling officials?

You can help alleviate the shortage by becoming an official.

Register online at: www.miwoa.org

Still on the fence?

Here are some reasons you should join the official's association.

Stay Connected to the Sport You Love

If you’ve wrestled before or have an appreciation for the sport, officiating is a perfect way to stay involved. You’ll be right on the mat, helping shape fair, competitive matches and ensuring the integrity of the sport continues for the next generation of athletes.

Earn Extra Income

Wrestling officials are paid per match, with rates varying depending on the level of competition and event size. It’s a flexible way to earn extra money—ideal for college students, teachers, or anyone looking for a rewarding side job during the winter sports season.

Give Back to the Community

Officiating gives you a chance to mentor young athletes, support your local schools, and ensure wrestling continues to grow. You become part of a close-knit community of officials and coaches who share a passion for the sport.

Flexible Schedule

You choose when and where you work. Meets are typically evenings and weekends, leaving plenty of room for school, work, and family commitments.

Advancement Opportunities

Start at the high school level and, with experience, you can move on to officiate regional, state, and even collegiate events. The sky’s the limit depending on your dedication and performance.
